The lighthouse map generator draws a lighthouse on a rocky island in open water, on five-foot squares. The island is a ragged ring of sand and boulders with turf on top, and surf breaking all the way round it. The lighthouse stands on the high side, drawn as a ground-floor plan: a thick round wall, a spiral stair winding up round a stone newel, and a door facing the middle of the island. The beam is thrown out over the water. Beside the tower is the keeper's cottage, two rooms with a hearth, a table and stools in one and a bunk and a sea chest in the other. A path runs down from the cottage door to a timber landing on the shore, with a rowboat tied up beside it, and a small stone oil store full of barrels stands wherever there's flat ground. Two to four of a fog bell, a rain cistern, a vegetable patch, gull rocks and a wreck on the reef fill out the rest. Every place is numbered and keyed.
How the island is built
The island is a rough ellipse pushed in and out by a few overlapping waves, so no two coastlines match. The light goes on one side and the cottage beside it, so the keeper never has far to walk in a storm. The landing is always on the shore nearest the bottom of the sheet, and the path climbs from it to the cottage and on to the tower door. The small buildings and the garden are placed only on the turf, never on the beach or in the surf. The wreck and the gull rocks go out in the open water, in a corner the island doesn't reach.
The lighthouse is drawn as the room you'd fight in, not as a picture of a tower. Twelve treads wind round the newel, and the stair is the only way up to the lamp room, which makes it the best choke point on the map.
What happens at the lighthouse
A lighthouse is cut off by design, and that's what makes it good at the table. Nobody comes or goes except by the one boat, so it's a locked-room mystery the moment the boat goes missing. Smugglers want the light moved or put out, wreckers want it pointing at the rocks, and the keeper may be in on it. The wreck on the reef is where the last ship ended up and why the party has been sent. The fog bell rings when nobody is pulling the rope. And when the storm comes in, the stair is the only place to hold off whatever climbs up out of the sea.
Free SVG and PNG downloads
Both formats are free for your games, streams and published adventures. The PNG is a 1920-pixel render ready for Roll20, Foundry or Owlbear Rodeo, and the Print button gives you a black-and-white sheet for the table. The SVG is the vector original: open it in Inkscape, Affinity or Figma to sink the boat, move the wreck or draw a cave under the cliffs. Everything on the map is drawn by our own code, so there's no attribution to carry and no asset licence to read.
What it won't do
It draws the island and the ground floor of the light. It doesn't draw the upper floors of the tower, the lamp room or the mainland coast. For a stretch of shore, roll a coast map; for the town the supply boat sails from, a harbor map.
Name the island, then send someone out to it
The island name generator names the rock, the ship name generator names the wreck on the reef, the pirate name generator names whoever wrecked it, and the ghost name generator names the keeper who never left.
